“I know I need to say no. But somehow, disappointing myself always feels easier than disappointing someone else.”

Maybe you say yes before you’ve even considered whether you want to. Maybe you know exactly what you need, but the thought of someone being upset with you is enough to make you reconsider. Or maybe you feel trapped in an arrangement everyone seems happy with except you, and you have no idea how to begin changing it.

Most of us think of boundaries as something we set with other people. But there’s also the moment, often before we’ve said a word, when we decide that what we need is unreasonable, inconvenient, or simply less important.

We explain away our exhaustion. We talk ourselves out of our anger. Then we wonder why we’re so resentful when, technically, we agreed to all of this.

In this bootcamp, Nicole and Lisa will help you use JournalSpeak to get honest about those moments. We’ll bring the guilt, fear, obligation, and resentment to the page, including the feelings you tend to edit because you love the people involved. You can love them and still need something to change.

Before you can tell someone else the truth about what you need, you need a place to tell it to yourself. JournalSpeak gives you that place.

What we’ll explore
  • The automatic yes: Using JournalSpeak to notice where you agree out of fear or habit, and what you wish you could say instead.
  • The fear of disappointing someone: Writing into what you imagine will happen if someone is unhappy with your choice, and what you believe that would mean about you.
  • Feeling trapped: Giving yourself permission to admit what feels unsustainable, even when you don’t yet know how to change it.
The feelings you keep explaining away: Going beyond “they need me” or “it’s easier if I do it” to hear the anger, sadness, and needs underneath.
  • Staying with yourself through guilt: Making room on the page for the discomfort of a different choice, without immediately deciding that discomfort means you’ve done something wrong.

Whether you’re new to JournalSpeak or have been practicing for years, we’ll help you bring your real relationships and conflicts into the writing. You don’t need to arrive ready for a difficult conversation. We’ll begin with the one you’re having with yourself.
